Job Title:                      Deaf Ed Interpreter       

Reports to:                   Director of Special Education/Coordinator of the RDSPD

Wage/Hour Status:       Nonexempt

Pay Grade:                   (depends on level of experience and certification)

Primary Purpose:

Provide interpreting services for hearing impaired students in a variety of educational settings.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Valid certification as a certified member of or certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or the Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI), Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS).

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Must be 18 years of age

Ability to interpret in a variety of educational settings

Knowledge of interpreter role and the Interpreter Code of Ethics

Ability to communicate effectively

Ability to work with hearing impaired students

Ability to read and interpret documents

Ability to speak effectively to groups

Ability to interpret/transliterate according to a student’s chosen modality

 

Experience:

Some experience working with children

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support

 

  1. Interpret in educational settings including classrooms, co-curricular activities, school-related programs and meetings, conferences, staff development, and other situations.
  2. Attend and interpret Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings as needed.
  3. Tutor hearing impaired students under the direction of classroom teacher.

Student Management

 

  1. Help manage student behavior. This includes intervening in crisis situation.
  2. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s communication needs.
  3. Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.

Other

 

  1. Maintain confidentiality.
  2. Participate in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  3. Regular Attendance
  4. To perform any other duties directly related to deaf education students as assigned by the supervisor.
  5. Regular Attendance

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

 

Equipment Used:

Copier, personal computer, assistive technology and audiovisual equipment.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Repetitive hand motion.  Maintain emotional control under stress.  Moderate stooping, bending, and lifting.  Works outside and inside.
