Job Title: GT (Gifted and Talented) Instructional Specialist
Reports to: Director of Innovation and Advanced Academics

Pay Scale: 187 days (Teacher contract)

Primary Purpose:
Develop and deliver a curriculum of appropriate learning experiences to help elementary GT students fulfill their potential for intellectual and social growth through advanced level products and performances. Assist in the training of teachers in strategies for working with GT students in their classrooms.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate
State-required thirty hours of GT training (required) or GT certificate endorsement (preferred)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Interdisciplinary knowledge of core academic subjects
General knowledge of elementary curriculum and instruction
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience
At least three years of classroom experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
- Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district’s GT and curriculum programs, and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Assist elementary teachers in the implementation of the district’s GT and curriculum programs.
Student Growth and Development
- Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Assist in the assessment of students for inclusion in the GT program.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Communication
- Establish and maintain open communication with students, parents, teachers, principals, and other school leaders.
- Conduct parent and community meetings as necessary.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Work with campuses to develop student schedules and, when necessary, arrange transportation.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
- Present at staff development sessions for teachers, as requested or scheduled by the District directors of curriculum.
- Assist in the training of teachers in strategies for working with GT students in the classroom.
Other
- Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
- Attend and participate in department meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Travel between elementary campuses to deliver the GT curriculum.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
Some travel is required.
